Fibromyalgia Q & A

How do I know I have fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a medical condition in which you suffer musculoskeletal pain, sleep disorders, memory issues, fatigue, and mood complaints.

Common symptoms of fibromyalgia include:

  • Extreme fatigue
  • Sleep challenges
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Burning, twitching, or tightness in your muscles
  • Widespread pain, often described as a constant dull ache
  • Tender points of pain at the shoulders, back, hips, legs, and neck
  • Problems with concentration and memory

Fibromyalgia can be hard for conventional medicine to diagnose, even though it’s a rather common illness. You feel pain and suffer disabling symptoms, but evidence of the condition doesn’t show up on blood tests or physical exams.

Who is at risk of developing fibromyalgia?

Exactly why some people develop fibromyalgia isn’t completely understood. The condition has a genetic component, and it’s most common in women. Usually, sufferers have another painful disease, such as arthritis or an infection.

Other factors that put you at risk are mood disorders, a sedentary lifestyle, and a history of physical or emotional abuse or trauma.

How is fibromyalgia treated?

There is no cure for fibromyalgia, but at Valley Medical and Wellness medication is generally the first defense against pain. Over-the-counter medications such acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Advil), and prescription medications like Duloxetine (Cymbalta), Gabapentin (Neurontin), and pregabalin (Lyrica) are used to address fibromyalgia symptoms.

Other therapies offered at Valley Medical and Wellness include:

Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT)

OMT uses hands-on techniques to stretch muscles and move joints to promote healing and relieve pain.

Trigger point injections

Trigger point injections are injected directly into painful soft tissue (muscle), versus a joint. Trigger point injections use both numbing agents and steroids to relieve pain and help release the tension in the soft tissue.
