Neck Pain Q & A
What causes neck pain?
Many people experience acute neck pain from their everyday activities, such as prolonged use of electronic devices, or due to poor posture. When pain in the neck becomes chronic, it can interfere with your sleep, your ability to stay active, and might even impact your emotional health.
Some of the most common causes of chronic neck pain include:
- Cancer
- Direct trauma
- Muscle strains
- Deteriorating joints
- Nerve compression
A common source of chronic pain for older people is arthritis, which develops in the joints of the upper part of the cervical spine.
How is neck pain diagnosed?
When neck pain is persistent and untreatable with rest and over-the-counter medications, the pain management team at Valley Medical and Wellness can evaluate your spine and neck function through a physical exam.
Your provider may also request imaging tests, like X-rays or MRI, to confirm the cause of your pain and ask you to perform certain movements to assess your range of motion and flexibility.
Once they understand the root cause of chronic neck pain, the team at Valley Medical and Wellness creates a pain management plan that focuses on both the immediate and long-term relief of your pain and mobility issues.
How is neck pain treated?
Treatment for neck pain depends on the cause of your pain and your overall health. Initially, your Valley Medical and Wellness provider may recommend physical therapy or osteopathic manipulative treatments (OMT), which stretch and strengthen the muscles that support your neck. These therapies can also relieve unnecessary pressure on your nerves due to herniated discs.
You may also benefit from trigger point injections, which are injected directly into painful soft tissue (muscle). Trigger point injections use both numbing agents and steroids to relieve pain and help release the tension in the soft tissue. Prolotherapy is another type of injectable treatment which involves the injection of natural substances found in the body, such as dextrose and saline, and a numbing agent to trigger your body’s natural healing response.
The team at Valley Medical and Wellness has extensive experience in prescribing pain-relieving medications to address chronic neck pain. They focus on your overall health to recommend the right oral or topical pain-relievers and monitor their efficacy over time for your safety.
If you’re missing work due to chronic neck pain, don’t delay an evaluation. You can call the Valley Medical and Wellness office nearest you.
